“How dare you talk to me like that, boy? After how we took you in when nobody else would?”

John thundered.

Trevor paused, hand on the doorknob. “You 65

only took me in because of the checks you got from the government. Or don’t you remember tel ing me that yourself the day you kicked me out?” Before John could thunder out a response to that, Trevor pul ed open the door and left. He didn’t pause to even think until he was safely seated behind the wheel of his car. Curling his fingers around the steering wheel, he took in several deep breaths, his whole body trembling.

What in the hel had he expected by coming back here? That John would welcome him with open arms?

That the man would say he was sorry for al the years of verbal abuse? That he should have never kicked Trevor out? That he loved him as if he were his true son?

A bitter laugh burst past Trevor’s lips. And yet people like Kevin wondered why he refused to form any permanent attachments to others. As if Trevor should wil ingly put his soul out there to be trashed again.

Besides, who in the hel was Kevin to talk? He and Jared gave Trevor the boot as soon as they could, too. So it’s not like their paws were clean in this whole matter.

Trevor sucked in a breath as he held back the tears.

Not only would crying do him no good, but it would just show everybody what a weakling he was. Everyone, be they human or shifter, already cal ed him slut, no sense in adding cry baby to it.

He turned on the car and pul ed out of the park.

He’d been a damn fool for even coming here. He’d been hoping to get some closure, instead, he ended up ripping open some painful wounds that he thought had long healed.

By the time Trevor pul ed into the parking slot in front of his apartment, he felt no better. Usual y a long drive soothed his nerves, but after the encounter with first Kevin and then John, Trevor felt worse than ever. He stil couldn’t believe how close he’d come to attacking his foster father.

Trevor closed his eyes, silently cal ing himself every name in the book. Al the civilized breeds of shifters prided themselves on being able to separate their human emotions with their animal side. To give in and go feral was considered a failure. Yet Trevor had almost thrown away everything he worked so hard for just for one taste of John’s blood.

Now I know how Shane must feel. When he kills, does he have any shame or regret after? Even if his targets are guilty, does he still hate that his animal half rules him if only for a few moments at a time? If so, then Shane must harbor more hurt inside than I ever suspected.

He got out of the car and locked the door before rubbing his aching temples.
